In a clear indication of the government’s intent to tighten immigration policy, the number of foreigners who failed in their bid to gain PR Status soared in the last 24 months.

The immigration policy was tightened in 2009 as part of a move to address Singaporeans’ concerns over competetition for jobs, ovecrowding, and the dilution of culture and values.  Only 26,265 forreigners were granted PR status in 2010, compared to 79,167 in 2008.
